Surgical Termination 2nd Trimester

Surgical Termination – 2nd Trimester

Safe & Effective Surgical Abortion for Pregnancies Up to 24 Weeks

At Tampa Woman’s Health Center Inc, we provide second-trimester surgical abortions (up to 24 weeks LMP) using a two-day procedure. This method is performed by an experienced OB/GYN and follows the highest safety standards to ensure a smooth and effective experience.

Because the cervix needs to be gradually dilated to allow for a safe procedure, the process requires two separate clinic visits over two days.

How the Procedure Works

Day 1: Cervical Preparation with Laminaria Insertion

Time Required: You will be at the clinic for 4 to 8 hours, then return home the same day.
Laminaria Insertion:

  • Laminaria are small, sterile sticks made from natural seaweed fibers.
  • They are inserted into the cervix to slowly and gently expand the opening overnight.
    Purpose:
  • Helps make the abortion procedure quicker, safer, and less painful.
  • Prepares the cervix for the removal of the pregnancy the next day.
    Pain Management:
  • You will receive a prescription for pain medication—it should be filled immediately after leaving the clinic.
  • Cramping is expected as the cervix expands overnight.

🔹 You must have an adult companion with you on the first night.

Day 2: Completion of the Abortion Procedure

Time Required: Expect to be at the clinic for another 4 to 8 hours.
Laminaria Removal & Vacuum Aspiration:

  • The laminaria are carefully removed to allow the cervix to fully open.
  • The doctor performs a vacuum aspiration procedure to gently remove the pregnancy from the uterus.
    Anesthesia Options:
  • A local anesthetic is used to numb the cervix.
  • IV sedation may also be available for additional comfort.
    Recovery:
  • You will spend time in our recovery room for monitoring before discharge.
  • You must have a driver to take you home after the procedure.

Important Information for Minors

Minors must inform a parent or guardian about the procedure.
The parent/guardian does not need to be present during the procedure, but:

  • The clinic must be able to contact them in case of an emergency.
  • The parent/guardian must stay with the minor overnight after the first day.

What to Expect After the Procedure

Mild to moderate cramping is common for a few days.
Bleeding may vary—some patients experience light spotting, while others have a heavier flow similar to a period.
Ibuprofen (800mg) can help with cramping and discomfort.

Follow-Up Care

✔ A follow-up exam (included in the procedure cost) is recommended 3-4 weeks after the abortion.
✔ If you experience
severe pain, excessive bleeding, or signs of infection, call us immediately.
