Best success rate (97%) if performed up to 8 weeks (49 days) of pregnancy.

Success rates decrease as the pregnancy advances.

  • How Long Does the Medical Abortion Process Take?

Requires a minimum of two visits (some cases may require up to five visits).

Step 1: First Visit—Take Mifepristone (Mifeprex) in the Clinic

    • This medication blocks progesterone, stopping the pregnancy from progressing.

Step 2: Second Visit (or at Home) – Take Misoprostol

    • Taken buccally (dissolved in the mouth between the cheek and gum) or under the tongue.
    • Can also be inserted vaginally 24 hours after taking mifepristone.
    • Causes uterine contractions to expel the pregnancy, typically within a few hours.

    Follow-Up Appointment:

    • Scheduled two weeks after the first visit to confirm the abortion is complete.
  • How Painful Is a Medical Abortion?

Pain levels vary from mild to very strong cramping.

Most women experience cramping for 4 to 6 hours, with waves of pain coming and going.

    Pain Medication:

    • Pain pills are prescribed to manage discomfort as needed.
    • A heating pad may help relieve cramping.
  • How Much Will I Bleed?

Heavy bleeding and passing clots are common during the abortion process.

✔ After the abortion, lighter bleeding can continue for 9 to 14 days or longer.

If bleeding becomes too heavy (soaking two pads per hour for two consecutive hours), contact us immediately.
