RU486 Pill

RU486 (Mifeprex) Pill: A Safe & Private Early Abortion Option

What Is the RU486 Pill?

The RU486 pill, also known as Mifeprex (Mifepristone), is an FDA-approved medication used for early pregnancy termination. Many women prefer this method because it is non-surgical, private, and allows them to complete the process at home.

This option is available for women between 4 and 10 weeks gestation and requires several clinic visits for follow-up care. RU486 is approximately 93% effective when used correctly.

At Tampa Woman’s Health Center Inc., we provide comprehensive medical guidance and support throughout the process to ensure your safety, comfort, and well-being.

How Does RU486 Work?

Step 1: First Clinic Visit—Taking Mifeprex

You will take one dose of Mifeprex (Mifepristone) orally in the clinic.
Mifeprex blocks progesterone, the hormone needed for pregnancy to continue.
This stops the growth of the pregnancy and prepares the body for the next step.

Step 2: At-Home Medication (24-48 Hours Later)

You will take 4 tablets of Cytotec (misoprostol) at home.
✔ These tablets can be
inserted between the cheek and gums or vaginally, allowing them to dissolve.
✔ Cytotec causes the
cervix to open and the uterus to contract, expelling the pregnancy.

Step 3: The Process of Passing the Pregnancy

Cramping and bleeding usually begin within a few hours after taking Cytotec.
✔ Bleeding can range from
light to moderately heavy.
You may soak 10-12 pads over several hours and pass clots or pregnancy tissue.
✔ For some women,
bleeding may not start for several hours or even the next day.
✔ Because the process can take time,
we recommend taking time off work and arranging childcare.

Follow-Up Care & Next Steps

You will return to the clinic in 1-2 weeks for a follow-up sonogram and/or blood test.
✔ This ensures that the pregnancy has been completely expelled.

What Happens If the Medication Doesn’t Work?

In rare cases, the abortion may be incomplete. If the pregnancy does not pass:
A surgical aspiration procedure may be needed to complete the process.
An additional charge will apply if a surgical abortion is required.

Who Is Eligible for the RU486 Pill?

You are between 4 and 10 weeks pregnant.
You are in good health and have no contraindications.
You can commit to the follow-up visits to ensure the abortion is complete.

Who May Not Be Eligible?

❌ If you have
a history of ectopic pregnancy.
❌ If you are
